Some cleaners have found in Peru a mysterious mummy inside a cardboard box, on the outskirts of an archaeological site. The mummy was found Tuesday in fetal position, tied with a rope near garbage outside an archaeological site in the pre-Inca city of Chan Chan.

David Carrasco, a municipal security worker for the Huanchaco District, explained to Reuters that the cleaners thought it was garbage but one of them opened the box and they discovered it was a mummy. If not for that cleanser, valuable evidence from the ancient world may have disappeared.

According to local information, it seems that the mummy belongs to an adult by the measurements of its dental file. Police do not rule out the possibility that the mummy ended up in a cardboard box after an attempted robbery that went wrong and was therefore eventually abandoned in a building in front of the site. It remains to send the mummy to the Ministry of Culture to determine its exact age.

Chan-Chan is the largest pre-Columbian city in South AmericaIt grew a lot until it became a capital with 30,000 people until it was conquered by the Inca Empire in 1470.

The Ministry of Culture has informed the newspaper Trade that the mummy may be pre-Hispanic and belong to the Chimu culture.
